One of the things that separates one fake grass company from another is its installation technique. Proper installation is the key to fake grass lawns that look real and last for years to come. Skipping any of the installation steps could result in an uneven surface, improper drainage and a host of other issues. That’s why it’s so important to choose a reputable company with a strong installation process. Here’s what to look for:

The installation begins with proper ground preparation. Not only does the existing sod and landscaping need to be completely removed, but the irrigation valves need to be removed or capped and the ground needs to be completely compacted. A high-quality fake grass company will use a vibrating plate compactor to ensure the ground is as firm as possible. Once this is done, it’s common for a weed and grass killer to be applied although this is not always necessary in hot, desert climates.

Once the ground has been fully prepped, it’s time to lay down the sub-base which is a 1" to 3" layer of rock aggregate; typically ¼ minus so you don’t run the risk of feeling rocks when you walk on your fake grass lawn. Evenly spreading the sub-base is a very important step in the process because this is creating the surface upon which the fake grass will sit. Any imperfections could become a problem when the grass is rolled out. The best method is to spread it out as evenly as possible, with a slight slope away from buildings, then use a vibrating compactor to firmly compact it. After this is done, it’s time to check for any depressions more than about ¼" deep and fill them in.

The last steps in the process are to roll out the grass and cut it to size using a sharp blade. Then, it’s time to seam the fake grass using carpet or roofing tape. Of course, the goal is to have as few seams as possible and a reputable company will know this. Topping the grass with an infill material – such as sand, rubber or copperslag – is critical to ensure the fake grass fibers stay upright and don’t get matted. The material should be swept into the grass for the best look.
